History and Historical Places of Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya is the one of the most important holy place for Buddhism which is situated on the bank of river Neranjana. It is famous because there Gautama Buddha has obtained enlightenment under a banyan tree, the Bodhi tree. Under this tree Gautama gain knowledge to become Buddha. Buddha was worn in 563 BC in Kapilvastu, which is now in Nepal on Baisakhi Purnima, but as a religion he was really born in Bihar. Because he leaved his house at age of 29 to travel and mediate in search of truth. After reaching of Gaya he mediates for six year at Urubela which is known as Buddhagaya in Gaya, he attained enlightenment,which is a stage of having knowledge about nobles and universal truths. Ashoka is the first emperor who built monks, pillars and temples for the Buddhist, which is known as Ashokan pillars. He contributed himself towards the consolidation, revival and spread of the religion.

What to See in Bodh Gaya :-

There are many places and temples to see in Bodh Gaya. Some of them are:- Mahabodhi Temple, Animesh Lochan Chaitya, Bodhi Tree, Chankramana, Ratnagarh, etc.

  • Mahabodhi Temple :- The temple is situated in the east to the Bodhi Tree. It is in the form of cylindrical shape whose basement is 48 square feet and height is 170 ft. At the top of temple architecture there are Chatras which represents sovereignty of religion. There is an image of the Buddha in sitting posture which touched the earth from right hand, in the main sanctum inside the temple.
  • Animesh Lochan Chaitya :- it is the place where Buddha spent one week for the great Bodhi Tree without twinkling his eyes.
  • Bodhi Tree :- It is the fifth succession tree under Mahabodi tree where Buddha had enlightened. Vajrasana is a stone platform on which Buddha Sat in meditation under Bodhi Tree.
  • Chankramana :- It is the sacred spot of Buddha's meditation during third week after enlightenment. It is believed that the lotus sprang where Buddha put his feet.
  • Ratnagarh :- It is the place where Buddha spent one week,and believed that there are five colors came out from Buddha's Bodh.
